- In the annual design and industry exhibition
Eating is a main part of peoples life. Using a bowl to eat rice, noodles and drinking soup is very common. However, normal bowls dont have a place for people to hold. Such as when people want to carry the bowl from kitchen, it will be difficult to carry when there is something hot inside the bowl. In addition, if there is something in one hand, it will be difficult to carry the bowl unless the bowl has a handle. It will be much more difficult for handicapped people with one hand or without hands to carry the bowl. When people drink soup, the hotness might burn them when they hold the bowl.
Normal spoons dont have a hook part. Therefore, they always fall into the soup bowl if the bowl is big.
Lena is a collage student who shares room with roommates. After a busy day of work and classes, she wants to have some hot noodle soup at home. She gets everything ready in the kitchen then she realizes the bowl is too hot to carry back to her room. She had two options: go back to her room or wait 4 minutes in the kitchen and feeling bored.
Size and space for approach and use
Equitable to use
Flexibility to use
Simple to use
Low physical effort
Since it is universally designed bowl, my target market could be anyone. It can be anyone who is doing something with one hand while want to carry some soup with the other hand. It would benefit handicapped people who just have one hand or no hands.
Have some kind of lip part for people to grab onto or carry easier.
The lip part should be wide enough.
There should be a spout part for people to drink directly form the bowl or they can place their spoons on that spout so the spoon wont fall into the bowl.
People wont get burned when they put hot soup inside the bowl
At the bottom of the bowl there should be some area for people to put spoon against with in order to get food. Also works better for people with less strength.
The shape of the bowl should be more ergonomic so that it is more comfortable for people to hold.
The color should be simple, elegant and also there should be more color choices.
- Spout makes it easier for people to drink soup directly from the bowl
It is also a place holder for spoons, forks, or chopsticks
The lip can be a place to hold onto when people carry the bowl from kitchen to dining room and people wont get burnt if the soup is hot. Dont need to wait for the food to cool down.
Even for people with no fingers, they can carry it by the lip so that the bowl wont fall.
The curve of the body is more ergonomic. People can hold the bowl from the bottom as well.
When people want to get food from the bottom, the inside bottom part is vertical, so people can press the spoon against the side to get food out from the bowl. Also works for people with less hand strengh.
It is easy to clean.
- 1. Comfortable to hold from the bottom
2. Grab the top when it is too hot
3. Lift from the lip
4. Drink directly from the bowl
5. Spoon sits on the spout part
- Why universal design?
During the whole research I realized sometime how things could be difficult for handicapped people. Some very little things in daily life, which is common and easy for normal people, can be difficult for handicapped people to do. Therefore, when we design, we need to keep them in mind and try to make our design can reach as many people as possible and make their daily lives easier.
