The client for my project is“Little White Lies” - a bi-monthly, independent movie magazine that featurescutting edge writing, illustration and photography to get under the skin ofcinema.
The brief was to create anoriginal cover illustration for Little White Lies magazine, depicting the maincharacter of one of the 2011 films listed in the brief. From the selected movies,I’ve chosen “Black Swan”.
In my view, it is aningenious story about how one can be absorbed with his own dreams andillusions. For a creative person, living in the world of illusion is necessaryas a part of inspiration, however, there isa danger of losing a feel of what is real and what is not.
Everyone has his own “BlackSwan” inside, it creates inner balance and harmony, there is no light withoutshadow. However, it is up to you, whether to let this “Black Swan” out or not.
In the illustration for themagazine cover I wanted to represent several key themes from the movie:
- perfection is not only control,it is also an ability to loosen yourself
- the idea of being absorbedby the mask/character
- the dark side took over
- scary and beautiful
- feminine, sophisticatedand strong, bold
In order to communicatethese findings, I was trying to create a feel of a mask/face blending together:empty eyes, decorative 2D illustrative approach. In order to represent the darkside of the story, I have been using strong, bold lines together withfeather-like, sophisticated ink splashes – to make the illustration moredramatic and at the same time depict feminine, ballet feel. The splashes alsoexpress the idea of ‘ perfection is not only control, it is also an ability toloosen yourself’.
