Bee Hive Bird Shelter / industrial design / MDF

Bee Hive Bird Shelter was conceived and built during an introductory class to industrial design at Savannah College of Art and Design in 2006. Fabricated from medium-density fiberboard (MDF) and then coated with white primer, the project brief limited the use of material to only one sheet of 4 X 2 foot lumber. This limit on material explains why the design takes advantage of a Russian doll system of circular rings, whose centers are not thrown away, but are used to furnish smaller rings. When assembled, each ring sits flat on a set of rabbets cut on to the main frame.
