Beyond Mama (BFA Show)

  • Beyond Mama
BFA Show at Southeast Missouri State Univeristy
  • Beyond Mama is a space for viewers to experience the lives of women who had the ingredients to go beyond those who came before and also view how they made a unique mark on the world. I chose to use cupcakes to represent the women based on how the relationship between women and cooking has changed throughout the years and because of how cupcakes have grown in popular culture. Cupcakes are a perfect example of how one small idea can grow and change throughout time to create a uniquely different idea or object.

Designing the different cupcakes created its own challenges due to the small space available for images. It was difficult to create the perfect forms and symbols to clearly illustrate these amazing women. Beyond Mama is a place for one to reflect on those who lit the path for us to follow and hopefully add new light for those to come. Please feel free to explore the space and create your own cupcake to illustrate your special ingredient that will help you go beyond.

  • Beyond Mama set up in the River Campus Gallery at Southeast Missouri State University.
  • ADAPTATION: Betty Ford had a life of constantly changing rhythms, but no matter the tune, she put on her dancing shoes and choreographed a new dance. She fox-trotted through a divorce to find her true love, waltzed right into the White House, jitterbugged through her breast cancer and addiction to alcohol all to come out on the other end helping billions of women get treatment for their illnesses.
  • CONFIDENCE: Mildred "Babe" Didrikson Zaharias exuded confidence with every shot, stroke and swing she took. She would walk in and say "Babe is here, who's coming in second?" Babe was fearless when it came to trying new things. When she got the hang of it, she was relentless competitor. She dominated her competition in the 1932 Olympics and stole the thunder from all golfers on the course. With her courage to compete she encouraged women to show their competitive attitudes and willingness to win.
  • VOICE: Eve Ensler saw a problem in our society of violence towards women and girls and did not hesitate to speak out about it. She broadcasted the issue to people by writing and performing "The Vagina Monologues" along with many other screen plays, books and articles. The problems are  still occurring, but her voice has raised awareness and saved millions of women's lives from being ruined by violence.
  • ADVENTURE: Nellie Bly, while writing for the Pittsburgh Dispatch, created many adventures for herself. She was not afraid to experience firsthand the subjects she was writing about, even if that meant being admitted into an insane asylum or traveling the world in less then 80 days. Nellie's goal was to bring her experiences into the homes of everyday people and to prove to the world that a woman's place was not just at home.
  • PERSEVERANCE: Alice Paul was constantly told no, but she was determined to finish the fight for women's rights to vote. No matter what she was told, Alice led the suffragettes with moxie and spunk. Parades, speeches and protests were organized to push the government to pass the 19th Amendment. She persevered through an extremely difficult fight to come out on top with the rights to vote and have a say in how our country is governed.
