This is perhaps one my favorite contemporary plays. I felt it was important to communicate the conflict of the area and what war has done to it.  I also felt it was important to communicate Arabic and Iraqi culture.  Carnage manifested itself in this design with the use of burnt and torn paper.  The culture came with the use of traditional Arabic calligraphy and motifs.

 

For the individual scenes, I wanted to use projection. Something I've encountered more and more in my design work is that many organizations want to begin using projections, but they don't always seem to gel with the set design. As a set designer, I want to learn how to incorporate projection into a design and make it look and feel like it all belongs in the same world.
