Thistemporary installation for C Space Gallery in Beijing, was created as a visualrepresentation of complex networks, such as social relationships within humansocieties. Individual elements are connected to form an integrated and cohesivewhole.
People meet in architecture
Thestaircase space is a key circulation area of any building. People will inevitably pass each other withinthis space, and as such it has the latent potential to be a place of meeting. The presence of the network installation helpsto draw out this latent quality by providing a novel and visually-intriguingfeature to serve as a subject of interest and discussion within an otherwisemundane and functional setting.
Thenetwork instillation was created using a recursion algorithm based on swarmbehavior. The form displays a higher order of distribution, demonstrating theessence of emergence behavior. Theemerging pattern will differ each time the algorithm is run, but the general distribution,of diffuse and concentrated areas, can be seen each time. The result is a complex and organic, yethighly-organised form with a robust underlying design-logic.
Theinstallation’s location within a staircase space allows it to be viewed frommultiple perspectives, and helps the visitor to explore and comprehend thecomplex form in its entirety.
Theinstallation is constructed from a simple combination of string and metalsprings. Screw hooks tie the network tothe walls and allow it to be hung within the exhibition space.
