Beasts of the Southern Wild Movie Poster

Beasts of the Southern Wild is a movie that revolves around Hushpuppy and the Bathtub community. It was released in 2012, years after Hurricane Katrina.

This movie poster aims to represent the human situation of feeling displaced in a bigger society - both experienced by Hushpuppy and the community hit by the hurricane.
Final movie poster - a 5 x 10 grid with one of the points deciding to go off the grid
For the early sketches and the process, see below:
Initial sketch shows a grid system with one of the southern points displaced from the bigger system, to join the typography set in a more organic, natural manner
Added the details about the movie, but in a more subtle way not to distract the viewer from what is really presented
Played with the idea of the grid belonging to a blueprint of something, and transformed the grid to become a 10 x 5 system, to represent the number of the states the country has
Played with some found texture, but decided to go against it in the end
And stick to a more blueprint feel. Also, some details such as the word "South" was changed to a cleaner, sans-serif type as an iconic device for blueprints
Final revisions included the shifting the orientation of the grid system to maximize the space within the poster, as well as including some small details as a treat for those who actually spent time to look at what the movie poster had to say
