Birds!

I love working on bird illustrations. There's so much personality and texture to work with. It is funny lately that I've had multiple requests for similar "bird song" compositions. I try to make each one distinct though. Here's a few examples for the past few months, some done partially digitally, some all by ink, good old-fashioned paint and elbow grease.
'TWEETS' - Columbia Journalism Review - Editor, Tom O'Neill

Here's the one that started the fad. I work regularly for the Review, and they are always kind enough to give me interesting articles to work with. This one was about the spread of different media. It was great that they let me do something quirky with it.
ON WINGS OF SONG- Detroit Home Magazine - Art Direction, Jessica Decker

The cacophony of bird songs in the Spring. Great to be able to work with Jessica on a spread across two pages. I think it makes for an interesting composition. Worked with oil paint & ink for this one
PEACOCK - Angels on Earth Magazine - Art Direction, Olga Jakim

This piece was partially done digitally. I inked the lines by hand and then added more colour in Photoshop. It turned out nicely vibrant.
SPARROW SONGS - Cottage Life Magazine - Art Direction, Steve Balaban

This piece was also coloured digitally with the ink work rendered by hand. This was used in the Q & A section of the magazine. The question was concerning the male white-throated sparrow song sometimes sounding like it was cut short. One possibility is an interruption by another male bird vying for the same female. Another option, which I prefer, is pure laziness since there might be no other fellas around to complete for the same lady. Sad.
