BFA Senior Exhibition

  • Lyrics of The National   A Photographic illustration
  • Overthe past two years, The National has become my favorite band. Their music and lyrics inspired the imagesand atmosphere of this exhibition. Each photograph is a representation of a line, a verse or an emotion captured from asong. The images are titled inconjunction with the songs they represent. What makes the music so incredible, andso appealing to me, is the genuine authenticity and ambiguity of the writing. The images I created are reflections of the music: authentic, ambiguous windows into our lives.

The work itself is a haunting reminder of the disillusion found in our day-to-day lives. A dominant theme in the work reveals the unavoidable transition from late adolescence to adulthood and the weight that comes with it. Other songs amplify concepts of relationships, events and emotion, specifically with friends, loves, going out at night, and drinking.

  • The National:

An indie rock band formed in 1999. The National consists of vocalist and lyricist Matt Berninger and two pairs of brothers: Twins Aaron (guitar, bass, piano) and Bryce Dessner (guitar), and Scott (bass, guitar) and BryanDevendorf (drums). Lyrics are multi-dimensional land at times difficult to interpret. The music itself is pleasantly calming, and melancholy at times. Each song exemplifies the wonderful and not-so-wonder lives of adults. Every verse is a representation; an emotion of what is familiar and unfamiliar to us.

Surprise, surprise they wouldn't wannna watch,
    Another uninnocent, elegant fall
into the unmagnificent lives of adults”
