Boat Race 2010: Promo
Commissioned by Red Bee Media on behalf of BBC Sport
I took almost all the still images that were used in the animation. They include all the stills and short video burst of both Oxford & Cambridge with the exception of the final shot of the cox landing in the water which is from the boat race last year. The shots of children in boats which are a mixture of stock imagery combined with a few photos donated by friends in the rowing community.
As a rower myself, this was a fantastic project to be involved with and involved spending a day with each crew in order to take as many stills as possible for use by the animation team. Also, having rowed at elite domestic level for a few years now myself, it was easy to build rapport with the athletes as well as make sure that I didn't act inappropriately around them whilst they were training.
The remit was fairly specific in that they wanted stills that lent themselves to the type of animation that they wanted to use, a definite background, midground and foreground in each image was particularly desirable as were sequences of movement and I think I captured these in most of the images.
