Avstralia (Russians in Australia)

Project:
Design an identity for the Russian speaking community for Australia. An unofficial identity, but an identity nonetheless. Mainly used for Social Media channels, the brand currently serves (April 2013) approximately 10,000 people combined from Facebook / Vkontakte / Odnoklassniki / LinkedIn / Kiva groups. Visit www.avstralia.com.au from time to time, things may change.
Avstralia, ie. a "v" instead of a "u". This is just a way it is pronounced in Russian. Also... avstralia.com.au, facebook.com/avstralia, twitter.com/avstralia ... it all made sense in the end.
Before and After. Well, the original logo wasn't so much of a logo, it was just there for the sake of it. It was only decided later that the Russian speaking community of Australia needed something more unique.

Work in progress
The idea

Needed to do a bit of research

Taking a closer look.

Maybe even do a bit of reading

Playing around with matreshka (russian doll / babushka doll) shapes

Pencil to paper. Adding random Russian / Australian icons into the body.

This won't do either...
Simplified. Getting somewhere here.

Moving into digital space now. Simplifying further.

A small glimpse of how things develop

Yep, this colour works.
