AudioBoo are a mobile and web platform that allow users to record and share audio with the rest of the world. With the release of Windows 8, Great Fridays were approached to prototype, design and build a new native application that would allow users to experience AudioBoo on their Windows 8 tablet, laptop and desktop.
We initially engaged with both AudioBoo and Microsoft at the Windows Technology Centre to define the capabilities of the new platform, user experience goals and the features and functionality of the app. Research was undertaken to discover how consumers were using AudioBoo across devices and this lead us to develop an app that centred around creating a browsing and listening experience for use on Windows 8 rather than giving it the functionality to record and upload content, which users tended to do on the move with mobile devices.
A user experience specification document was produced that detailed the information architecture for the app, native components, core screens and how the app would adapt to new Windows 8 views (hub, snapped, etc.). This document gave the AudioBoo team an insight into how specific components of the app would function along with providing detail on how the newly designed application would utilise new Windows 8 paradigms (tiles, charms, etc.).
A number of concepts were then created before going on to design the finer details of the app including iconography, core screens and stylised editorial content. The final release of the app features a large 'Staff pick' which surfaces the AudioBoo team's latest and greatest boo. The hub also promotes trending boos and gives users the ability to browse through channels, featured and popular categories.
With the build of the app it was imperative we engaged with Microsoft's AER Team, to ensure the application met all application approval criteria; in turn smoothing the submission process to meet an approval deadline in mid-October. This meant the new AudioBoo app was available for the October launch of Windows 8.
Since launch, the app has had some fantastic feedback having been featured in the spotlight position in the Windows 8 store and has been named app of the week in a Windows internal mail.
