Ancient Messene
Beautiful archeological site in the Peloponnese, Greece
Tucked away in a beautiful valley in the Peloponnese, Greece, lies the site of Ancient Messene (or Messini). While preparing a photography tour in this part of peninsula, we visited the Hellenistic site for the first time this year. And we were impressed! Old paved roads guided us along the theater, fountains, grave houses, mosaic floors, remains of the main sanctuary and other temples and finally to the lower stadium surrounded by proud colonnades. The site with its attractive and scattered olive trees is very well kept by the local staff. We paid an entrance fee of 3 euro for the museum, located at a short distance of the main entrance; the site itself is free. We spotted a marble base turned into a donation box in the treasury of Artemis, so that we at least could show our appreciation.
