American Family, 2012

The exhibition opens with a thoughtful explanation of why we chose to show these photographs that offer a window into the life of a local lesbian family.
At the center of the exhibition is a sharing table where visitors can reflect about their own families and respond to prompts that ask "What makes your family special?" "How has your family changed over time?" and "What does family mean to you?"
Each photograph is framed with a question to spark conversations between children and grownups.
Many of the responses we got from children came in the form of beautifully detailed family portraits complete with family pets.
Children take pride in sharing their artwork and it fills the exhibition with visitors' unique family stories.
This set of photographs got extra giggles due to its appropriate placement near the entrance to the bathroom.
We continued the questions throughout the rest of the upstairs hallway, extending the exhibit experience into the rest of the museum.
Here I am, installing vinyl lettering in the sharing station.
