Red packet (called "angpow" in Malaysia) are envelopes containing cash gift traditionally presented during Chinese New Year.

 

For 2013, I have designed an angpow for Alpha245, a series of highlighting the rich possibilities of the Years of the Snake. Recipients experienced this not just by opening the red packet's flap, but by opening the entire packet itself.

 

Each angpow was carefully perforated along the surface so that lifting the flap also allows it to unravel completely. Once done, the angpow turns into a stylised snake that can be manipulated and displayed in a rich array of poses. Slots along the body also allow for more display variations.

 

Making angpows less disposable and more decorative, these designs turned a symbol of prosperity into a demonstration of possibilities. They also convey Alpha245's belief in ideas that take on fresh, fascinating forms.
