Assignment: Re-create the jacket cover design of one of your favorite books.
Solution: I chose Murakami's After Dark since it one of the few novels I've recently read from cover-to-cover. It was so engrossing and haunting that I actually read it through a second time, and plan on giving it a third read in the near future. After Dark focuses on the surreal experiences of a handful of characters in Tokyo over the course of about six or so hours. Given that it's post-modern literature, the themes and plot are a bit hard to pinpoint. Alienation, much like Kafka, is an ever-present theme in Murakami novels, and it certainly shows in the misfortune, tragedy and absurdity found in the lives of the characters within this particular work.
However, since the themes were themselves too ambiguous and abstract for a simple book cover design, I decided to choose George Orwell's 1984 as my final choice. The themes of a dystopian future, "big brother", and social and psychological oppression I think shall prove to be more readily lucid as visuals. I'll be posting it once it's completed.
