African American Cultural Center, NC State University

    New Identity
  • The African American Cultural Center at NC State University has been in existence since 1991. Its mission is to promote awareness of and appreciation for the African American and other African descent experiences. Since its founding it used the Ghanian Akan symbol called the 'Sankofa' as it's logo.

Research revealed that many African American Cultural Center's at universities across the United States used the Sankofa as their logo. A different Akan symbol was chosen, namely the 'Golden Stool', to separate NC State AACC. The 'Golden Stool' stands for the seat of knowledge. The stool symbol was modified with a Sankofa egg to give some continuity from the previous logo and to give the appearance of a person with open, celebratory arms. Letting visitors know the Cultural Center is welcoming and friendly environment.
