Statement: My interest lies in identifying/exposing, that a number of outside forces (social, cultural, natural etc.) along with unique variables, have to necessarily support a change, in order to be recognized as a positive (supportive) adaptation (mutation) – or not; resulting in a maladaptation typically leading to the death or extinction of an organism.
As is the nature of adaptation, skin adaptation is a “process, which takes place…, whereby an organism becomes better suited to its habitat.” Skin adaptation is directly related to obtaining a healthy, balanced amount of vitamin D3 from ultraviolet radiation (UV) by skin exposure to the sun; too much or too little can become life threatening.
Production of melanin in the skin influences tolerance for UV penetration. The dominance by one of two forms of melanin helps to determine a requirement or balance between over and underexposure. Individuals with light complexioned skin produce a higher amount of Pheomelanin (light). Individuals with a darker complexion produce a higher amount of Eumelanin (dark). The number and size of melanin particles differ from person to person creating a range of complexion across our species.
An orange circle represents tolerance to UV, or, the amount of ultraviolet needed to penetrate the skin to produce a healthy, balanced amount of vitamin D3. The darker the skin, the greater the tolerance (or, the more UV exposure needed). The size of the orange circle is governed by the size and color of melanin particles; represented by dark to light circles and determined by the person’s skin-color. Read Less
