ARC3002M (Work In Progress)

In this project I am designing a sober living environment in the central Lincolnshire town Woodhall Spa. Substance abuse is a problem everywhere yet there is seemingly little help on offer, particularly in Lincolnshire. This is a work in progress, not all of the research and images have been included.
80% of people addicted to substances (particularly Opioids and Amphetamines) come from a background of mental, physical or sexual abuse as children.
Substance abuse can lead an individual down many paths, the most common of these being an exclusion from 'normal' society and a downward spiral into illicit means to sustain a habit. Because of their addiction an addict can be forced to become what society feared they were, regardless of the person they were before their addiction. It is a self fulfilling prophecy.
The prolonged abuse of substances will have detrimental effects to a person’s mental and physical health. Often it can be fatal.
Through research conducted into the psychology and treatment of substance abuse conclusions can be drawn that will affect the design process and help to create the best possible environment for recovery.
Residential rehabilitation centres are rare as they are expensive and funding is scarce. As well as being a charity, the facility will generate income, feed itself and provide vocation for patients through the production of food.
Care farming is an existing initiative showing that the above can be achieved.
A diagram showing massing, connections and the organisation of space according to the needs outlined through research.
A series of conceptual images aiming to help visualise the qualities and organisation of space at an early stage. The form was taken from development models built around the priniciples of the above diagram.
