Since it was founded in 2006, ARC has been a leader in sustainable and responsible practices in the oil and gas industry. This year ARC wanted to communicate this culture of leadership by living their promise of sustainability and innovation by creating a unique online CR report. Like any corporate report, the CR report had a ton of information that needed to be presented. A large part of our challenge was creating a way to present the content that was simple enough for readers to get through and interesting enough to keep them awake.

 

I liked working on this site mostly because it was our first plunge into HTML parallaxing and the challenges we came accross designing it and getting the concepts accross were fun to solve. The issues around loading times and browser compatability were less fun however but alot of new knowledge was passed around the team and the next time we tackle something like this we'll be more prepared. 

In the end, we created an easily scanable site that enabled readers to scroll through environmental elements, like forests, sunflower fields and sunny skies, which served to divide and deliver the overviews of the main sections of the report. Each environmental background reacted to the scrolling action of the reader—clouds float by, snowflakes fall and leaves scatter. At any point, readers could click through to access more detailed content, which was complimented by animated charts, documents and videos. They could also jump to a section of particular interest using the traditional top-screen navigation. This multi-tiered content approach enabled us to create a great experience for readers who just wanted to skim the report as well those who were interested in delving deeper into the charts and detailed content beneath.
