We all have our own understanding of what 'nature' is. As urban and suburban life expands, the wild places of the world are becoming increasingly fragmented and subject to industrial or private development. I realize that life as you and I know it has been built upon the foundations of this human ambition to alter our environment for the better. And sometimes even for the worse.
However, I hope that we don't have to keep pushing the natural world out of our way in our attempts to build better lives and a better world for ourselves.
I think of these photos as being of 'a close nature', because I am always struck so deeply by the beauty and balance of the natural world. There is a certain sense of being that is only attainable when you are surrounded by unbridled earth. How much will be lost as the urban centers of the world continue to expand so rapidly? I hope these photos bring you closer to this sense as well, because the survival of so much depends upon our priorities and actions as humans.
