WordPress Plugin: WP SVG Icon Set

WordPress Plugin: WP SVG Icon Set #1

I created this plugin because I found that I was often re-importing the same icon libraries to most sites I was developing for clients. I had some free time one afternoon and packaged the @font-family library in to a pretty WordPress plugin with some features. With the use of this plugin I am able to cut down on set up time on fresh projects.

This plugin provides over 500 icons which the user can insert any where on to their WordPress site. One of the great features of these icons is that they are not your standard .png or .jpg icons, but instead they are .svg (scalable vector graphics). If you don't know what .svg files are, I suggest you take a peek at (SVG Files). .SVG files are the way of the web in the future. If you know about vector graphics, than you know these can be scaled up as large as you want (literally, as large as you want) with out any loss in quality at all.

I have used these in many different ways on sites. For one, a great use for these is adding a category icon to easier decipher between post types. This technique is most commonly used on the homepage of a site. I have also successfully added animations and hover states on to these icons to give them that little extra 'pop' that some sites require.

After developing and using the plugin for a few days I noticed how helpful it was, not only to me, but to many web developers around the world. So I have decided to push forward with it, and create a 'pro' version of the plugin. With the pro version, users will be able to scale up or down, change colors or add animations to the icons before putting them on their site or in a post. Without these features users would have to hardcode styles on to the icon, and if they don't know much html/css then, ultimately, they can't use the plugin to it's full potential.

I have a plan to release the 'pro' version in the coming weeks, but for now I have built up a site to market my product. Users are directed to this page from with in the WordPress Repository. On this page users can view some features of the plugin, sign up for 'pro' version release e-mail notification, and preview all included icons. They then have the option of re-directing back to the repository to download the plugin.

So far reviews have been nothing but positive.

(Below) This is the WP SVG Icon plugin gui from the WordPress dashboard. Here users can select which icon they want to use, then they are presented with that icon specific code to use inside the 'examples' box at the top. Users would then copy that code in to any section of their template, post or theme.
