Michael Hockett Virginia's profile

Introduction to Learning Guitar Fingerpicking

An independent real estate developer who works with vacation properties in Virginia, South Carolina, and Florida, Michael Hockett also serves as president and general manager at Tidewater Auto Auction in Chesapeake, Virginia. Outside of work, Virginia resident Michael Hockett enjoys singing and playing the acoustic guitar in his leisure time.

Fingerpicking offers a challenging but rewarding skill to learn for acoustic guitar players. Like other guitar techniques, it requires time and practice to build up the finger strength and muscle memory.

When you first start out, you can begin with this basic fingering: your thumb plays the guitar's bass strings (the low E, A, and D), your index finger plays the G string, your middle finger plays the B string, and your ring finger plays the high E string. As you play, keep your wrist and arm still, allowing your fingers to do the work.

If you decide to practice with fingerpicking patterns in books, you may notice those fingers notated as p, i, m, and a respectively. Those letters come from the Spanish names: “pulgar” for thumb, “indice” for index finger, “medio” for middle finger, and “anular” for ring finger.
