A Soap for Cardiff

A Soap for Cardiff - Second Year Project
This was one of my favourite projects from my three years at university. For this project each class member was allocated a set of characters with a story line and a specific shop. I was given a gift shop, with the storyline around a character called Ethel who had worked and lived above this shop for years. She had recently lost her husband and had some help updating the gift shop for a more modern audience, however had kept her flat very much in the past, with all her husbands history still intact. We had to create an exterior for a backlot, based on a building of our choice in Cardiff and two studio sets one for the flat above and one for the shop interior.
I did a huge amount of character building, deciding on her likes, her dislikes, her wealth, her past etc. Which could then lead me into being able to personalise her home and make it recognisable to her character. I created three white card models from my CAD drawings.
The exterior building was taken from two buildings, the exterior from a gift shop in Llandaff and the top of the building was taken from a shop on Albany Road. I named the shop 'The Treasure Trove' and created a little decoration and backing so the shop front could be shot on the backlot and the audience would believe it was actually there.
The interior of the gift shop was neatly arranged but with a homely vintage feel. There is wrapping paper and jewellery racks, the shop goes off to a small back room for teas and coffees and all the drama that happens in soaps.
The upstairs flat has a living room with the fourth wall positioned as where the TV and kitchen counter would be. It has a small living room open to a kitchen with large bay window.
Visuals created using Sketchup, Twilight and finished in photoshop.
