METHOD's profile

'Mackintosh by Method' for the Glasgow School of Art

Founded in 1845, the GSA is internationally recognised as one of Europe's foremost university-level institutions for creative education and research in fine art, design and architecture.

By the end of the 19th century the School was one of the leading art academies in Europe and its reputation in architecture and the decorative arts had reached an all time high. At the very heart of this success was a talented young artist, architect and designer, Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

In 2011 Method Studio were commissioned by the Glasgow School of Art to create a new suite of stacking chairs for the schools prestigious Mackintosh Room.

To sit comfortably amongst numerous irreplaceable original examples of Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work the brief called for a sympathetic but forward thinking design.

We firmly believe that traditions are not honoured through repetition, so rather than approaching the project from a predictable angle we instead chose to embrace Mackintosh’s passions for new materials, Asian styling and flamboyant nouveau influences.

After nearly two years in development the 24 chairs – each meticulously handcrafted by Callum in solid ash, rose or pastel green aluminium and hand-stitched leather at our workshop in Linlithgow, are now in their new home at the Glasgow School of Art.
