Russian-Israeli poet, Alexander Penn, was born in Nizhne Kolymsk, Russia.

According to his own testimony, he was raised by his grandfather, a Swedish count and bear hunter named Jenssen. When Penn was ten years old, the grandfather was killed while on a hunting trip. Before he died, the grandfather gave Alexander his father's address in Moscow, and the boy walked from Siberia to Moscow for several years, looking for his Jewish father. About his life - a motherless childhood, the physical-metaphorical journey in the wilderness, his affinity to Communism, the difficulties of immigrating to Israel - Penn writes in his masterpiece poem, Song for Myself.

I created a series of illustration based on this poem, while making references to Penn's biography, Siberian folk-tales, and the fantasy of this (probably made-up) story.

אלכסנדר פן נולד בניז'ני-קולימסק, לחוף ים-הקרח הצפוני ברוסיה.
ע"פ עדותו שלו, הוא גדל אצל סבו, שהיה רוזן שוודי וצייד דובים בשם ינסן. כשהיה בן 10 נהרג הסב בעת מסע ציד.
 לפני מותו הספיק הסב לתת לנכדו את כתובת אביו במוסקבה, והילד הלך מסיביר למוסקבה במשך שנים אחדות בחיפוש אחר אביו היהודי. על תולדות חייו - ילדות ללא האם שמתה בלידתו, המסע הפיזי-מטאפורי בערבות השלג, זיקתו לקומוניזם, קשיי העלייה לארץ - כותב פן בשירו, "שיר לעצמי".
בחרתי לאייר סדרת איורים בעקבות השיר, תוך התייחסות לאלמנטים מחייו של פן, לאגדות-עם סיביריות מקומיות, ולפנטזיה של סיפור חייו (המומצא, כנראה).
