A combination of the depictive, the abstract, and the psychological, surrealism represented the alienation which many people felt during the modern period. Surrealists sought to reach into the psyche in order to be “made whole with their individuality.” Here, Precious Jewels refers to a range of creative acts and efforts to liberate the imagination. Illogical scenes with photographic precision created strange visions inspired by everyday life and the dream world that allows the unconscious to express itself. Surrealist works feature the element of surprise and unexpected juxtapositions.
