A set of 3D designed, memoji based stickers for the Jamaican heroine.
It’s told that Nanny was a West African who arrived in Jamaica as a non-slave. She was the leader of a group of former African slaves called the Windward Maroons. The military leader among them, she was suspected to possess abilities of the supernatural kind. Kind of like Captain America, but without the shield – or maybe, we don’t know.
Anyway, whether it was sticks, shields or spells, her efforts along with the other Maroons afforded their defence against British colonisers in Jamaica, way back in the 18th century. They did this without Wikipedia, the IMF or the JPS.
Maybe she did have supernatural powers 🤷♂️
Process
In actuality, no Jamaican living knows what Nanny actually looked like. Imagine that.
The only reference available is a depiction of her on the Jamaican $500 bill:
As such, the profile view was the reference started out with. Not much of a problem with symmetry tools in Cinema 4D.
The stickers had to be memoji based. I chose that method so that I could easily manipulate her expressions once the base model was made. The stickers were to be playful but not too realistic.
Starting with a cube in Cinema 4D:
Once the head was modeled and UV unwrapped, skin texture was painted in Photoshop.
After the texture was applied, I began rigging the face using Joints. I’ve never actually rigged a face before. In fact, I don’t like to rig meshes most times. This was the first time I’d have to rig a face to make expressions, so I was learning as I went along here.
Now that the rigging was done and the expressions working, I can comfortably say that I’m still not a fan of rigging. Many things to learn.
Expressions were then experimented with and made. Started out with simple ones. More complicated ones will be made for an update to the sticker pack, along with the remaining 6 Jamaican heroes.
