Elle Kari, the Girl From Lapland

I grew up reading the "Children of the World" book series. These books told the stories of children from around the world, accompanied by the amazing photos of photographer Anna Riwkin-Brick. These books captured my imagination and other children's imaginations all over the country. One of my favorite books in the series was dedicated to Elle Kari, a Saami girl who lives in Lapland with her mother, father, dog Tjapo, and a handsome selection of big reindeer and naughty goats.

I chose to illustrate this lovely book, which, to me, is a part of a different era, when the world was bigger and Lapland farther away, an unreachable dream.

כשהייתי ילדה, גדלתי על סדרת הספרים "ילדי העולם", בהם הוצגו סיפורים של ילדים שונים בליווי תמונות של הצלמת חנה (אנה) ריבקין-בריק. הספרים הללו שבו את לבי והציתו את דמיוני ואת דמיונם של רבים אחרים בארץ. אחד הספרים האהובים עליי בסדרה הוקדש לילדה אלה קרי, שגרה בלפלנד עם אביה, אמה, הכלב טייפו, ומבחר נאה של איילים צפוניים ענקיים ועזים שובבות ורעבתניות. בחרתי לאייר את הספר המקסים הזה מילדותי, שהוא מבחינתי חלק מתקופה אחרת, בה העולם היה גדול יותר ולפלנד היתה רחוקה יותר, מעין חלום בלתי-מושג.
