Pushing for a Better Tomorrow

This is my submission for the Headline Interpretation project in Texas State University's Communication Design Foundation I course. This project was created through physical collaging and the use of a photocopier.

Statement of Intent:
This piece is based on an article entitled “Diversity on the Bridge.” It is an article about diversity in the original Star Trek television show and its later films and series. On the show, officers could be of any race. With that in mind, the article makes the point that Star Trek “pushed the boundaries of network television,” especially since these ideas were part of the show even in the 1960’s, when racial equality was inconceivable to a sizeable portion of the country. This piece is based on that point. The letters V and O from the title were combined to create the emblems worn on the crew’s uniforms, and, in the piece, various emblems of different values were assembled into a larger emblem to represent the equality and diversity of the show. The large emblem is breaking through a barrier, and at the front, leading the charge, is the emblem worn by the character Uhura, who not only was a black woman being treated as an equal on the show, but also shared in “the first interracial kiss on a scripted television show.” The barrier is meant to be the boundary that prevents shows from taking a controversial and progressive position. The combined emblem, however, is only part way through the barrier to show how both the show and television can go even further in addressing ideas of equality. Finally, the page is wider horizontally to emphasize the left to right movement of the emblem.
