5 Tips for the Most Enjoyable Experience - Brent Lott
Brent Lott - Downhill
Downhill is a discipline in biking in which the riders go down a hill through technically demanding tracks, all while racing the clock. The tracks are usually timed around 3 to 4 minutes and are characterized by steep terrain with elements such as roots, fast-paced flat portions, portions that require jumps, counter slopes, etc. The speed is, on average, 25-30 mph but can reach even whopping 45 mph.

The beginnings of downhill mountain-biking go back to the ’70s when the first-ever race was organized in Fairfax, USA. The bikes used were very different from the ones used today: they used skinny tires and had no suspensions. It was in the ’90s when downhill mountain-biking started its expansion. The first championship was held in 1990 in Durango, Colorado.

Tips to improve your performance in downhill mountain-biking

1. The body position

A good body position is crucial to a successful ride. If you go on a flat section, the body should be as natural as possible, firmly on the seat, while holding the handles with both hands and with your arms slightly bent. When descending, it is best to stand up in a centered position. Your elbows should be open, knees slightly bent, and heels should be kept low. This position helps you to absorb the impact force of any obstacle, which is most definitely significant when riding at this speed.

2. Check your brakes

Making sure that your brakes are functioning and in good condition is extremely important. In addition to this, there is a technique for their proper use. Brakes should be used with a light touch, pressed gently more and more if needed. If you are doing a longer descent, use your brakes ‘on-and-off’, as to avoid overheating them. Braking is done with one finger only, and you should be careful not to get tired quickly, so get a good grip on the handlebar with your fist.

3. Physical condition

Even though it may not look like it at first glance, downhill mountain-biking requires a lot of physical strength and preparation. You need to be able to jump over the obstacles and pedal constantly. A lot of riders have problems with arm and joint pains. Brent Lott, a recreational cyclist for many years, advises: “Even if you are not riding competitively, you need to build strength in both upper and lower parts of your body. This way, you are avoiding excessive tiredness, and you will be able to enjoy your recreation fully”. It is extremely important to stretch before and after the ride, to avoid any injuries.

4. Protection

Downhill mountain-biking requires body armor. You will need a helmet with a chin guard, knee pads, elbow pads, long-finger gloves, and back protector. It is advised to invest in even protective shorts and neck brace. It is important to be both comfortable and protected, without restricting movement. A good pair of goggles is also a good idea, and make sure that they do not fog up and that they fit your face.

5. Eyes up!

Maybe the most important piece of advice: keep your eyes straight ahead. In many situations, quick reactions will be essential for your safety, and you need to always keep your guard up. Looking a bit ahead can save you many unpleasant crashes.
Continuous practice and being careful will improve your skills in this discipline, along with these 5 tips. Just follow these techniques, and it is guaranteed that your riding will be that more enjoyable and successful. Whether you want to do it professionally or recreationally, you should definitely try it, as it is, in the words of Brent Lott, “the most fun you will have in years!”
