HIPAA Regulations for Medical Scribes

Health care executive Ashok "Ash" Bagdy heads outsourcing services for Cameo Corporate Services Limited, a multinational business outsourcing firm. Ashok Bagdy also leads innovative new departments, including the expansion of the virtual medical scribe department. Like in-person scribes, virtual scribes must adhere to all privacy regulations in the health care industry.

Medical scribes have long been an integral part of the health care industry. These workers collect patient data and encode it into the patient’s medical record. Whether the scribe is physically present or working remotely, he or she is mandated to follow all privacy regulations outlined by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA).

Firstly, scribes may only store any health information within a secure portal or encrypted storage infrastructure. Most health care systems provide their scribes with specialized HIPAA-compliant software. Further, scribes must report any breach of patient data within a narrow time period. All scribes are also required by law to maintain patient confidentiality. Failure to comply with HIPAA can result in prosecution or high financial penalties.
