Nick's First Day at Adobe Charcoal Portrait

Nick's First Day at Adobe

Today was the first day for my Intern, Nick Lamkin. He's coming to us after completing his first year as a Freshmen in UCLA's Fine Arts program. Having recently completed the portrait project for Adobe's CreateNow Frame Me project, I thought it would be a good idea to have him go through the same process of building a portrait in Photoshop.

But while he was having fun doing that, I wanted to challenge myself with something more analogue.

While he was working, I took a few shot of young Nick. The best is the last in this series where he reacted to how he felt about his recent experience of going to Las Vegas for the EDC concert.
Project & Draw

Now that we had some good shots to work from, I set up projector and a taped a sheet from a large roll of paper to the wall.
Drawing as a Collaboration

Traditional drawing is a very solitary process, but once Nick was done with his Photoshop Portrait, it seemed natural to turn the charcoal into a collaborative process. Doing so allowed us to talk about the values we like/dislike about the medium. Generally we just had fun getting our hands dirty and smudging black dust on the page.
Final Portrait

Couldn't be happier with the results. Lots of fun and knowledge aquired in the process.

Thanks Nick!
