Devnagari Letter Exploration

Devnagari Single Letter Exploration
For exploring a single letter, I have selected the devnagari letter 'ध', pronounced as ‘dha’ in English. The motive behind doing this project is to understand the basic anatomy of the letter and further explore it in various ways with the help of a grid, in order to come up with maximum possible forms of the given letter with a single skeleton. The process gives a clear idea as to how letters can be designed using a simple grid and can further make its way towards stylisation, creation of new typefaces and so on.

Designing the Grid
After studying the structure of the letter, few basic elements like circle for the curves, horizontal lines for the Shirorekha, vertical lines for the Dandas were thought of also the overlapping of these elements would give different outputs.

Calligraphic Explorations of the letter

Similarly designing other letters
Apart from the selected letter, how another letters may look like, when placed together in a word, was also explored. This paved way towards a new exploration of creating new typefaces.
So, the study has a wider scope and a broader perspective.
This assignment can help a designer in improving his sense of thinking and creating different forms, shapes and structures, that would not be thought of otherwise. Further, the forms can not only be used in Typography or Calligraphy, but can also be used in designing Symbols and Visual Identities.

Thank you !
