Black Box

A book that black students never had before

My role: design system and book design

This is a project made by Zumbi dos Palmares college, the only internationally known college in Brazil targeted to black people. In a country as racist as this, we’re daring to tell the untold stories. Pharaohs were black. Cleopatra was black. Africans had deep knowledge of astronomy, medicine, maths, and other subjects long before the western world.

To lock the project, more than ten thousand copies were printed and distributed to the students and each chapter of the book became a subject to integrate the college grade.

Design system

Grid, typography and color.
Generative design

The map of Quilombo dos Palmares is the image that forms all images in the book through generative design.
Palmares was the name of one of the the greatest quilombos, places of refuge and resistance for black people who ran away from slavery back in the past.
Black stripes

When pages with black stripes are turned, important information that people didn't know will be revealed.
