Mutable Type
The presented editorial illustrates an essence of purity and unconvelutedness which resides within the design. An encompassing of the concept of Mutable Typography hypothesized by Rolando G Alcantara is exhibited here as well as accompanied with his created specimens alongside a mutable typeface invented by myself; AlphaBeta and Dimension ︱respect correspondingly.
AlphaBeta
Dimension︱
Dimension︱is more than a functional typeface; this typographic system (based on the theoretical construct of the first dimensional perception of reality) becomes an extension of the English language where a word transforms into an abstract graphical representation of what that word signifies.
System of Dimension︱
The abstraction has the capacity to be interpreted however would likely require the grid system used to create the graphic. A single word as depicted here is the combination of the above shown ‘letter-lines’; each ‘letter-line’ is place onto its corresponding alphabetical grid-line. The presented grid system merely provides aid in interpreting the abstract graphic; a word is read outward in wherein the edge of the next longest line represents the subsequent letter; the letters shorten as one gets closer to the center and thus end of the word.
Mutable Typography is the thesis project of Rolando G Alcantara. It was done for the Graphic Design Masters of Fine Arts program at the Maryland Institute College of Art, class of 2012.
