The Register is a leading global online tech publication, starting out in London in 1994 as an occasional email newsletter, The Register began publishing online daily in 1998. The newsletter turned into a website and over the years a back end system got created to accommodate the stream of stories that are published daily.
The site has gotten plenty of fix ups over the years but never run by a UX/design team. The company was lacking a lot of communication between departments and the business/user goals of the site were never researched.
I have worked together with the departments, to create a full overview of the sites business goals,  users, content and dependencies. I have stripped back the site from old stale content, enhanced our commercial/ad purposes and created a more readable and quicker working pages for our users and gone fully responsive.
The old site was very ridged and this made it impossible to add content, change layout or accommodate any editorial or commercial changes. We have set up an interface within our backend system where editors can now change the layout of the homepage as they see fit to accommodate the current news. Commercial teams now can test their ads and promo units on several places on the page.
The whole site is broken up into rows and each row can get a "Row type design" allocated to them. We have put in restrictions to stop the site from breaking and stop departments conflicting.
