SR-N1 Concept Watch

The Cockerell Navigator, Limted Edition Timepiece

The project was dedicated to celebrating the great British engineering and design milestone the Saunders Roe Nautical One Hovercraft

The design itself takes detailing from the orginal SR-N1 and attempts to convey an industrial post war look and feel. I wanted the design to have a distinct contemporay feel "nearly Sci-fi in form" this design detail was added while reading newspaper articles and observers reactions, to the first tests of the SR-N1. The public referred to the SR-N1 was being nearly alien or ufo like due to its unusual design and function. The design had to highlight this and take consideration for how the SR-N1 was also constructed.

The watch was designed using the specifications of a Sopard A-10 Movement (Swiss made). The watch has a unique 4 part case construction, were the lugs are incorporated into the main body allowing for a separation of materials and finishes. This design feature was added after observing construction photos of the SR-N1 the feature also gives a lightness to the design.

The watch was made using stereolithography, this is an additive manuafcturing process which focuses ultraviolet light onto a photopolymer, constructing the watch parts in layers. Zcorp 3D printing was used to create the packaging or turbine of the SR-N1 and both parts were finished to represent the material choices.

Its was truely enjoyable to research the history of the SR-N1 and design a watch based on Sir Christopher Cockerells engineering and design achievements.
I hope I was successful in my design and have created a watch that truely celebrates the SR-N1 and British design.
