MIT IIC Promotes Technology’s Positive Influence

An angel investor, Jean-Jacques Degroof has taught at various universities in Europe and in the United States. Jean-Jacques Degroof earned an MS and a PhD from the Sloan School of Management at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A mentor to entrepreneurs, he is supportive of MIT programs such as the MIT Inclusive Innovation Challenge (IIC).

During the fourth MIT ICC held last November, $1.6 million in prizes were awarded. The winners were selected from a group of 20 finalists from all over the world. The finalists had been vetted from five regional events, which saw over 1,500 applicants. As noted by the organizers, technology is often portrayed in a negative light, being blamed for taking away jobs and workers' livelihoods.

MIT IIC highlights technology’s positive influence in improving people’s lives. The awardees included JobGet, a mobile platform that connects employers and low-income job seekers; Tienda Pago, an online short-term loan provider for small stores in Latin America with affordable interest rates; and Agros, a firm that assists small Latin American farmers through the use of precision farming and remote sensing technology.

Generous prizes are granted, as MIT IIC has the goal of supporting research and recognizing the impact of technology and innovation. The initiative also wants to provide needed resources so startups are empowered and can help more people.
