BXK | BLACK CULTURE. ART. HISTORY.

A Black History Month art series focused on promoting those who influenced my personal and professional life.
Artists like Daniel Farris are a rare find. However, when he appeared on Netflix’s “Rhythm and Flow” the world would know his name. His humble attitude and fierce drive to uplift his community is beyond inspiring. He grew up in Inglewood CA where gang violence was a common thing. However, his love for music and art helped him break away from the status quo. He became a teacher and devoted himself to inspiring the youth of his community to explore the world and dream big.

His music diverges from themes of popular mainstream rap/hip hop and focuses on telling stories with deep messages. From the musical production to music videos his style is unique and addictive. (He is like the Silent Planet & Kendric Lamar of Rap). He also speaks fluent Spanish and mixes Spanish lyrics in his music. Personally I’m a big fan of bilingual artists and people that promote multicultural exchanges. Being an art teacher myself I find him to be a huge inspiration.
We all have those people that try to categorize what we can and can’t do based on our “ethnic stereotypes”. One of my role models during my punk band days was Stevis Harrison of FEVER333 (formerly in the CHARIOT). Watching another dread-head black man tear it up on stage was beyond exciting and inspiring.
💀
At the time I had a band of my own and didn’t know of any other black musicians in the Hardcore/Punk music scene. So discovering Stevis gave me the confidence to not let anyone else’s opinions of me dictate my future.

Thanks!!! @st33vis

Taylor Rivers, aka @Uniquely_Rivers_. A black model tearing it up in South Korea. She inspired me to continue with my dream of traveling and expanding my art connections to South Korea despite the negative opinions of those around me. I'm glad I found out about her because living in South Korea and networking with the artists there was fantastic!
