Archaic Ox Mask - Filmbase Exhibition

Love Illustrate Exhibition, June 2013 - Boes Mask

The boes, is the ox mask of the Sardinia carnival, one of the most ancient festivity of the Mediterranean. The origin of the mask It's unclear, and it represents a ritual of thousands years old.

The figure of the bull is an ancient Punic-Nuragic deity, symbol of the life force, present in civilizations of the Mediterranean area. The “boes” represents the animal rebelling against its master, the Merdule, that uses a stick “su Mazuccu” or a leather whip “sa Soca”, to trying restoring order.

I built the structure of the mask with cardboard, which I covered with hand-made papier mache. Once the mask was covered, I applied plaster and painted with acrylics. I designed the characters with Staedler and Technicolour pens, and Posca markers.
