When using a piece of equipment for the first time, I like to be as experimental as possible, to use everything at the very height of it's use so I know what it's capable of, before dialling it down for the desired effect.
For these shots, I did that first part (as I was playing around with coloured gels and a wind machine) but rather than settling for a more subtle approach, I wanted "more more more!"
I started off by being influenced by the way people such as Tim Walker and Erwin Blumenfeld used colour, before settling on the rough idea of wanting to re-create the look and atmosphere of some of Maurice Binder's James Bond title sequences. I adopted a humour-based approach, influenced in particular by a quote from U.S sitcom, Frasier. Upon Frasier Crane deciding he needed an orchestra for his radio station jingle, his brother Niles asks "Haven't you heard of less is more?" to which he responds "ah yes, but if less is more, just think how more more will be!". My intention then was to take things people usually stay away from (saturated colours bleaching out detail, wind machines, cheap plastic gems etc) and turning everything up to "full power".
