LIGHT CANVAS

Light Canvas was born from the idea of bringing new functionalities to clothes to provide the wearer with new abilities. In a context where skin health isn’t a general concern and overexposure of sunlight is accepted in order to get a tan, this project aims to shed some light on the actual damages UV rays cause to the skin. By designing a capsule collection of clothing that changes to a certain colour when exposed to sunlight, the wearer will be warned before reaching a dangerous exposure time. Not only the actual garments have been designed, but also the way this information is shown on them, and how the collection is communicated, providing with motion a graphic design that you place on the body.

This two booklets showcase the project on its entigrity. The “Book One: Thesis” guides the reader through the design process, from the idea where the project started to the explanation of the final pieces. On the other hand, the “Book Two: Sample Book” shows in detail each and every one of the swatches, trials, experiments made throughout the design process.

The design of these books was inspired by the sun. The verticality of looking up to the sky determines the elongated format, while book and page numbering is always located in the upper possition inside of a circle. The titles orbit around these numbers like planets around the sun do. In order to achieve a seamless experience, the booklets are also UV reactive in the same way that the garments are.

An extensive exploration of graphic resources was made in order to find the one that would best communicate this danger. Then, an examination of the body’s shape  as a three dimensional object was made, and a study of how sunlight interacts with it.

The actual garments were conceived with the results of this explorations as a starting point, and ended up being simple, white garments that get painted by light when they get hit by sunlight.

The belt acts like a bridge that connects fashion design with graphic design, providing the user with a wearable, fisical object that translates and gives a meaning to what’s happening on the garments.

Finally, a lookbook where the collection is explained is developed, so the collection can be communicated and shared in an easy way, since a raise of awareness is much needed in this subject.
