The Light of Bernheim

Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is a small gem of sylvan beauty south of Kentucky's largest city, Louisville. Tucked away from the roar of the interstate and not-so-distant major airport, Bernheim is a welcome respite from the modern world. The park has many trails and varied terrain. It is truly a special place.

Using the Shostakovich piece "Fire of Eternal Glory" as a soundtrack, I created this vector poster I call "The Light of Bernheim". The figure featured in the cathedral of trees is modeled after one of the sculptures at the park. "Let There Be Light" is a bronze sculpture by George Grey Barnard and stands as a glorious sentry above the final resting place of Isaac W. Bernheim and his wife. You can read about it and the other sculptures on Bernheim's site.

This poster is a marriage of styles. I like to think my particular style is tinted slightly by that of the great Charley Harper. Harper's natural illustrations were something I thought worked well with the subject matter. I was also inspired by the original Fantasia film's final sequence and the travel posters of years past with their divine images, subtle gradients, and bold colors.
