Also known as cannabidiol, CBD is a common natural remedy extracted directly from hemp, and it can be used to treat many common ailments. Due to its ability to relieve pain, scientist have suggested that CBD may be capable of preventing the breakdown of a chemical in the brain that has a direct impact on pain, mood, and mental function. One of the recognized future proposed applications of CBD in medicine is its application in the alleviation of cancer-related symptoms.

A study conducted with 177 people reviewed the effect of THC and CBD on cancer patients with cancer-related pains that did not respond to pain medication. Also known as tetrahydrocannabinol, THC is the most important psychoactive chemical in cannabis. At the end of the study, it was discovered that people treated with extracts containing THC and CBD were relieved significantly as compared to those that were given only THC extract.

Another study of 16 people treated orally with a combination of CBD and THC showed that the combination results in a significant reduction in chemotherapy-related nausea than merely treating patients with standard treatments alone.

Although CBD is currently reported by the World Health Organization (WHO) to have no effect indicative of dependence potential or abuse, further studies of CBD are currently taking place in order to ascertain its safety and efficacy.
