Paper Lines; Sabeena Karnik and Paula Scher

For the book design I decided to make a hardcover book
because I believe the design looks better, feels better.
Having a hardcover book allowed me to experiment and go for a double layer cut-out of a Paula Scher shatter silhouette over an original paper quilling design. I made that piece of art by hand and call it seashell swirl. I enjoyed learning paper quilling it was calming.
Because Paula Scher has many designs that are inspired by Russian Constructivism, I took inspirational from the Russian art style that began in 1913. The color palette of black, red, and off-tan color with the offset type resembles the industrial propaganda era. Here are some excerpts from the book that shows the typography layouts
I designed for the book.
I titled the work of art used on the poster and website “Zero Arrows” and it is a mixture of the Sundance Film Festival 2013 poster Paula designed and inside the arrows is the quilling art piece Sabeena did for the production company Holmen Paper Magazine “PAPER”, and it is a nature Zero and not an O. I focused on negative space a colorful inviting art style that is clean because that is what I most comfortable with.
The official website for the book release and special exhibition in which both artists were in attendance. The use of negative space is not used as much but the design concept remained such as color palette and art used. It was a just a simple website that promoted the event and share a brief bio and art pieces of each artist.
