Selector - Portable DJ Mixer

Industrial Design
Designed with portability and tactility in mind, the Selector utilizes weighted jog wheels combined with touch screen versatility to create a solution to mixing on the go. Perfect for the DJ that's always on the move, the Selector lets you mix tracks on the train, at a friends place or for a party. The Selector is also a great solution for those who are just getting started in DJing, it provides an complete package that can be used to hone your skills without the outlay of buying a whole mixing rig.
The Selector can be used with or without the second jog wheel, for maximum flexibility and portability. When at home it has a cradle from which it charges and connects to a computer

One of the main ideas I have tried to capture with the Selector is the tactility found in DJing. Many DJs like to mix by sound and feel. To accommodate this, the Selector’s jog wheels are weighted and carry momentum much like a traditional turntable.
Development

The Selector originally started as a uni project, the brief was to design a cellphone for a person with a specific set of characteristics. I choose to design a cell phone for a professional DJ. Professional DJs make most of their money touring, so the ability to be able to mix music without setting up a full rig is invaluable. Another factors I had to consider was DJs need precise control over their music, something a touch screen may struggle to provide. Because of this the main feature I incorporated was the jog wheel for accurate mixing as well as the distinct turntable look.
Original design

Model to test ergonomics

Bottom of the DJ phone, the convex shape references the shape of a traditional phone.
Having only one jog wheel would be limiting to the the DJ, so for home use I added the cradle which houses the second jog wheel
After finishing my degree I came back to this project, although it had potential it was not a finish fully developed product.. I dropped the cellphone aspect of the project and concentrated on the design of a DJ portable mixer. Instead of being geared towards one specific person, the design could now cater for a broader audience, not only could the Selector be a tool for a professional DJ that is often on the move but also an comprehensive product for those who are just starting out in the hobby. The basic concept was there but it needed to be streamlined, modernised and detailed.

Below are some iterations I went through before getting to the final product
