你是什么人?- 我是广东人。

Do you ever wonder if our cultural background had in a way influenced how we behaved and how others perceived us?

In the past, habits and traditions were aspects of culture that had guided the way of life of the older generation of Chinese Singaporeans. The environment where they lived in shaped their habits. People were able to identify members of the different dialect groups based on their distinctive character traits. However, in modern times where the boundaries of these dialect cultures were blurred, the behaviors of people could no longer be guided by these intangible rules.

This book provides an exclusive view into the third largest Chinese dialect group in Singapore, Cantonese. This book is an exploration based on character traits gathered from a group of older generation Chinese Singaporeans. This book will inspire you to reconnect with your roots and observe if character traits are still prevalent in our modern society.

The character traits gathered for the Cantonese dialect group inspired the concept behind this book. The irregular folds of the pages by using Turkish fold represent the sharp tongue or hostile character trait of the Cantonese dialect group. A contrast to their hostile character, Cantonese are said to be level headed. To show the contrast, the book is of a regular shape. On the surface, the book shows a calm disposition, but when the book is open, the contrast in character is revealed. As the contents of the book were hidden in the folds of the pages, this relates to their cunning personality in which others would not know what they are thinking. Pages of the book are connected as a single long piece. This is to represent their talkative character in which they go on and on whenever they start a conversation.
