The Associacao Brasileira Beneficente de Reabilitacao (ABBR)in Rio de Janeiro.
ABBR has helped more than 360 thousand patients in the past 55 years. Thousand of stories recount the recovery of the patients, many as the victims of violence. More than 70 percent of the patients come from the Brazilian health system Sistema Unico de Saude (SUS). The multidisciplinary team of physical and occupational therapists, orthopedists, pyscologists  other social workers work together to rehabilitate patients suffering from injuries and amputations as well as diseases such Parkinsons, cerebral palsy, myopathies and neuropathies. Protheses and other orthopedic items such as shoes, wheel chairs and crutches are also manufactured on the premises.

Carlos Ribeiro, 55, is being treated at ABBR after a violent assault. He worked at an insurance company and had just picked up her daughter when the accident happened. They held a red light at an intersection when two men with guns came over and demanded their money. Carlos foot slipped on the brake and the two men fired 9 shots through the window. His daughter was hit in the arm and Carlos was hit in the chest. He is now paralyzed from the waist down. The crime was senseless--nothing was stolen. "The only thing they took were my legs. The only thing I do is go to the doctor, get medicine and go to rehabilitation. The medicine is expensive for my family and it is difficult to survive. "
