The brief set was to design a cover for a Penguin or Puffin book, and create a special edition cover, aimed at a relevant market. I chose Wizard of Oz (Puffin).

Wizard of Oz is a classic, kids and adults know the book, and film. At the start of my initial research of past book covers, I found there was not a book cover aimed at adults. This allowed me to set my aims for this project, in which to design a cover which appealed to both children and adults.

Through research, I gained the concept of two interacting covers, the dust jacket would be die-cut and show the hard cover below, and would interact with the illustrations on top.

Through development of this idea, I formed the concept of illustrating the famous icons of each main character (Dorothy, Scarecrow, Tinman and Lion) on the dust jacket, and illustration the item they are searching for on the hardcover, and both would interact to create the full illustration, while the hardcover still has more illustration to it, which is revealed when removing dust jacket.

Dorothys heel, is her home she is searching for.
Scarecrow, is gears in a brain, as he is searching for brains.
Tin Man's face is made up of a heart, which he is also searching for.
The Lions face is made of a medal, as he searched for bravery.
